Velma Oates and Ben Oates, ca.1930. They were my maternal grandparents, Mother Oates and Daddy Oates. He delivered mail on a country route in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. She was a teacher and a librarian in Greenville, Kentucky. They always had a big garden and she canned fresh vegetables every year. Her Thanksgiving and Christmas meals were large mouth-watering spreads topped off by several kinds of pies and cakes. Yummm!
